The twentieth season of Australia’s favourite TV show, The Block, has been filled with drama, tension and some seriously dramatic results. This year, contestants faced an exciting twist: building holiday homes on picturesque Phillip Island – with the season aptly named ‘The Block Island’. With expansive properties (each around a quarter-acre), contestants needed boundary fencing that could deliver on style, functionality, and performance. Let’s explore how each team’s vision came to life with the help of our versatile, high-performing TrendWall® solution.
House 1: Maddy and Charlotte – the entertainers’ dream
Maddy and Charlotte brought signature youthful energy into their holiday home, embracing the theme of relaxed beachside living. Their design features on-trend curves throughout, from the deck’s edges to a rounded pizza oven and firepit seating. Their outdoor space is finished with plush timber seating – a perfect space for relaxation and merrymaking alike. Additionally, an above-ground Plungie pool completes the space, creating an idyllic spot for summer entertaining.
Here, TrendWall® provides the privacy required to create a true holiday haven, with proven acoustic attenuation ensuring holidaymakers won’t disturb (or be disturbed by) the neighbours. Painted in a soft white, their backyard truly embodies a seaside entertainer’s dream! The landscaping features abundant greenery, with Dave Franklin noting, “We’ve got tea tree here, we’ve got lilly pilly, we’ve got the blechnums there, we’ve got a very coastal palette of trees here and a lot of lawn as well.”
House 2: Courtney and Grant – The Block Island’s ‘Moditerranean’ escape
Married couple Courtney and Grant crafted a stunning indoor-outdoor retreat with the charm of a modern Mediterranean holiday villa. Their design ethos is all about blending seamless outdoor flow with luxurious simplicity. Limestone stepping stones lead to a sophisticated alfresco area, complete with a pizza oven, smoker, and pool – the ideal space for gathering friends and family. TrendWall® delivers a premium, refined backdrop, allowing the considered design details of the space to take centre stage. Unsurprisingly, this home has been dubbed a space that “sells the dream.” “This indoor-outdoor flow, this is what people pay for. This is what gets them emotionally connected to a property and envisaging themselves with all their family and friends feeling at home,” Judge Marty Fox gushed. And with judge Darren Palmer observing ‘“That looks lush and expensive”, it’s evidently no surprise these Sydneysiders won the hotly contested Backyard week.
House 3: Ricky and Haydn’s holiday resort
Fan favourites Ricky and Haydn took the concept of a holiday oasis to the next level with their vibrant resort-style backyard space. Dubbed “The Fun Factory,” it’s clear that they designed the space with family-friendly fun in mind. “It’s the fun house. We’ve got beach balls, we’ve got lilos,” remarked Shaynna Blaze, perfectly encapsulating the essence of their design. Accordingly, the sprawling lawn is ideal for outdoor games and features a custom swing set. Guest judge Dave Franklin adds, “That’s not just grass. This is Lilydale turf… it’s tough enough for cricket, footy—whatever you like on this grass here!”
With the second-largest backyard on The Block, this retreat boasts a large pool and a lively bar area. Their uniquely customised TrendWall® enhances the tropical-inspired ambience, showcasing its adaptability with a bold, dark paint with striking monochrome trims, posts and capping. Adding a lush Grafico wall print showcases TrendWall®’s versatility – in fact, plenty of our customers fix items to their ModularWalls! “It mirrors the fun and thoughtful design of the interior, perfectly tuned for holiday living,” noted Darren Palmer. “While it may not be as chic, it’s undeniably fun.” This backyard certainly screams good vibes and long summer nights!
House 4: Kylie and Brad’s bold beach shack for The Block Island
Located at the end of The Block, Kylie and Brad faced unique logistical challenges, but they overcame them with style and flair thanks to TrendWall®. TrendWall®’s quick installation allowed them to meet deadlines despite delivery delays, ensuring they could maintain their ambitious schedule. Their home embodies bold, edgy vibes, featuring striking black pool interiors, dark styling, and recessed seating areas. The dramatic black palette reflects the couple’s moody aesthetic, with a pool deliberately designed with a black interior. “That’s a great size pool. It’s a major selling point having this pool area just off the living space,” Darren points out. The minimalist, dark fencing creates a stunning contrast with the lush surroundings and gives an undeniably chic, contemporary edge.
House 5: Kristian and Mimi’s contemporary coastal escape
A plunge pool, a repurposed boat bar, and coastal navy styling evoke a sophisticated beachside atmosphere. With the largest backyard on The Block, Kristian and Mimi took advantage of their 552-square-meter space to create a coastal retreat filled with nautical details. Dave Franklin shared, “As soon as you walk in, you’re drawn to [the large pool]. It screams resort.” TrendWall® not only enhances the appearance of the space but also offers the privacy and proven noise reduction needed for this expansive property. It’s a versatile, high-performing addition to this already impressive backyard. Nearby, a fire pit is protected by a sturdy TrendWall® solution for evenings filled with family fun and stargazing. “It’s a cracker,” states Darren, highlighting the thoughtful landscaping that simultaneously invites warmth and connection.
