A DIY project may seem like a daunting task to begin. To help you succeed, we’ve listed the top 4 DIY fence mistakes so you can easily avoid them. We’re here to guide you every step of the way, from sloping blocks to painting and more.
Countdown to the top DIY fence mistakes
Mistake 4 — not factoring in a sloping block
Firstly, if you are installing ModularWalls on a sloping block, you need to decide the style of sloping fence you prefer. There are three methods to install your fence on a sloping block:
Method 1:
Stepping the bottom of your panels and maintaining a minimum 1800mm wall height at one end and a taller wall height at the low end of the slope. Therefore, leaving a gap under one end of your wall panels.
Method 2:
Raking/cutting the base panel and maintaining a maximum 1800mm wall height. This method ensures no gap under your wall panels but will reduce your wall height at one end.
Method 3:
Raking/cutting the base and maintaining a minimum 1800mm wall height at one end and a taller wall height at the low end of the slope. The result of this method is no gap left under your wall panels and an increase in wall height at the lower end of the slope above 1800mm. Therefore, a longer base panel is required and needs consideration when placing your order.
Secondly, if you have a sloping block, it’s always best to discuss options with our friendly sales team when organising your quote. Each site is unique, so the more information you can provide, the better. Our guide to measuring your site will help determine the ground slope and is a great first step in project planning. Knowing the details of a sloping block also determines if you require longer posts or additional post infills to finish your wall in your chosen style. So, avoid this DIY fence mistake by discussing your sloping block from the get-go.
Lastly, suppose you know which ModularWalls’ wall style is suitable for your project. In that case, the relevant installation guide offers further information on stepping or raking your wall.
Mistake 3 — inability to lift large fence panels
Suppose you have planned your DIY fencing project down to the last detail. Now you’ve begun the installation process and have your posts in place. Next, you’re ready to start installing your panels. However, you quickly come to the realisation the panels are too heavy to lift into the posts!
Don’t be caught out by number three on our list of common DIY fence mistakes. Inserting wall panels requires two people to lift the panel vertically and insert it into the top rebates of the post. It’s crucial the panel is guided down at an even rate to prevent the panel from jamming. So, when planning your DIY fence project, be sure to prepare for the weight of the panels. Plus, have a safe and secure platform to stand on if you need additional height to insert the panels correctly.
Our most common panel weights are:
- AcoustiMax panels used in SlimWall, TrendWall, VogueWall and EstateWall range in weight from 22.03kg to 44.61kg.
- TerraFirm panels used for retaining walls range in weight from 33kg to 66kg.
For further information on panel weight for your specific project, it’s always best to speak to our friendly sales team.

Mistake 2 — not painting your modular wall before losing access
As mentioned, every DIY project is unique. And your purpose for installing a modular wall can vary from needing a privacy screen to a new boundary fence, to name a few. However, it’s critical to factor in painting and sealing your entire wall system within 30 days of installation, especially if you lose access to one side of the fence after installation. For example, suppose you install a SlimWall fence in front of an existing wooden fence. In that case, once the SlimWall is in place, you won’t have access to paint and seal one side of the Modular Wall.
Furthermore, not painting your wall compromises the warranty and the longevity of your new fence. So, in these instances, the easiest way to avoid this mistake is to paint and seal your modular wall before installation. Visit our installation guide page to view our painting guides.
