Large-scale development saves money with low carbon, enviro-friendly retaining walls

ModularWalls’ enviro-friendly, low carbon retaining walls were the perfect choice for Cedar Heights, a brand new master planned community.
Cedar Heights is a brand new master planned community, consisting of approximately 60 new homes, located in the fast developing suburb of Redbank Plains. The design of the development required a number of retaining walls installed throughout the site at various heights up to 1.8m, whilst keeping aesthetics, budget, timeline and enviro-friendly practices at the forefront.
ModularWalls TerraFirmX Retaining Wall was the perfect fit for our client’s requirements. Capable of retaining up to a height of up to 3.0 metres, the revolutionary composite strength of the TerraFirmX panels enable it to withstand a load of 5 kPa active soil pressure and 10 kPa vertical surcharge – an attractive attribute due to the community boundary bordering roads and driveways.
The sleek, fibre cement finish of the walls provided an architectural finish, with the option to paint or tile the exposed surfaces to match the integral design of the development, which was a primary concern for the developer. Installation time was halved due to the lightweight nature of the composite panels and modular nature of the wall, and the pre-engineered designs made it simpler and quicker to attain construction approvals.
When comparing to concrete sleepers that are traditionally used for the creation of retaining walls, the embodied and emitted CO²/m² are up to 70-80% lower. This dramatic reduction is a result of the manufacture of ModularWalls products, installation requiring less machinery and the lightweight nature of our panels providing higher efficiency in transportation methods – our trucks are packed to volume, rather than weight. Our client was thrilled by this reduced impact on the environment, and the cost savings offered an exceptional bonus that can make all the difference in commercial developments.
