EnduroMax® railway noise barrier protects peace and quiet for neighbours of Artarmon Station
3 February 2020
On behalf of Sydney Rail, Brefni Civil Engineering required a railway noise barrier to protect surrounding residents from the operational noise of the Artarmon station and expansion of the shunting yard.
The design brief required a barrier that met the acoustic and rail performance requirements, whilst creating an aesthetically pleasing finish. Furthermore, the project posed certain access issues, with the passage being only a few metres wide. Therefore, the components of the noise barrier needed to be incredibly lightweight, to accommodate a manual installation methodology.
ModularWalls’ revolutionary EnduroMax solution effortlessly met the brief. Utilising the high performance, highly impact-resistant panel, the barrier design easily met the strict acoustic and rail performance requirements, whilst overcoming the restricted site access and site safety regulations.
With its lightweight components and modular design, each panel was carried in by hand to overcome the restricted site access. Our Aluminium post system was chosen for ease of installation, including internal reinforcements and custom engineering to achieve 3m heights.
However, whilst light in weight, the EnduroMax panels deliver high acoustic performance; with a Weighted Sound Reduction Index of ~33Rw, they effectively protected residents from railway noise. Running over 120m long, the design included access gates and post mounted static line systems for safe work practices of the rail line maintenance crews. Finally, the barrier was finished with decorative laminated strips to achieve a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic.
