Transform your home into a staycation resort
We might not be able to head off overseas to explore new wonders and cultures right now, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a great holiday. A staycation is a fantastic way to enjoy a break and reconnect with loved ones. Plus, depending on how extravagant you make your staycation, you could save a lot of money compared to jetting overseas. Below are just a few ways you could have a brilliant staycation.
What is a staycation?
A staycation is exactly like heading on holiday to Fiji, Bali, or some other fabulous destination for a well-earned break, except you are enjoying your holiday at home.
So, to make the most of your staycation and maximise your downtime, we recommend treating your holiday as if you were heading away. Set time aside and think about all the supplies you will need, and any home updates required to guarantee you have a fantastic holiday. For instance, create a pool oasis, and holiday playlist, and don’t forget your holiday books to read by the pool.
If you’re a planner, consider drafting a holiday itinerary, so you are more likely to stick to your staycation, and not get caught up in your usual routine. For example, leave the general chores during your time off, and hire a cleaner for the end of your staycation.
Set yourself a budget for things you need at home and any daily outings within your town. If you have kids, book them in to do a few activities of their own – just like going to a ‘kids club’ on a ‘real’ holiday. Don’t forget to book your outings, like that new restaurant, or show you’ve always wanted to see.
Set the scene
If you plan on using your staycation to switch off and unwind, then it’s a good idea to unplug from technology and minimise your time on the phone just like you would on holiday. You might even switch your phone to do not disturb and update your voicemail message.
If you’re lucky enough to have a pool at home, why not create your own resort-style space, to have fun with the kids, or to sit back and relax with a book and a cold drink. Think in-pool lounge chairs, or pool slides for the kids, lounges, umbrellas and fluffy towels. You can easily create a few outdoor living zones with a separate lounge area, fire pit and bar.
You’re on holiday, so set yourself up for happy hour or a few sundowners by the pool or back deck with a bar cart or complete outdoor bar. Get creative and mix a few cocktails or mocktails that you haven’t tried before. You could even have theme nights – bring on the Hawaiian shirts and Pina Coladas. Add a few hors d’oeuvre and some music, and you’ll be ready to dance the night away under your cabana decorated in fairy lights, tropical décor and fresh flowers.
Sleep under the stars
If you don’t have a pool, you can still make the most of the great outdoors in your backyard. During the day divide your yard into a picnic area and lounge area – spread out some blankets or rugs and some floor cushions and get comfortable. Create a games area (croquet or bocce), and finally set up your fire pit and pitch your tent! Yes, why not sleep outside either in a tent or out under the stars. The kids will love it, just don’t forget the marshmallows!
We all need a little pampering every now and then. So to make the most of your staycation transform a space in your home to be your very own day-spa. Clear out any clutter, set up some candles and diffuser to create a tranquil atmosphere along with some fresh flowers. Don’t forget your pampering products, your fluffy robe and slippers and some soothing music. Then all you need to do is book an in-home massage, and you’ll be feeling refreshed in no time!
A staycation is a great time to try a new exercise or begin a daily exercise routine. If you have an undercover outdoor space, set up your home gym or yoga studio and enjoy the fresh air while working out. Plus, if you’re undercover, you can still exercise if it rains. Otherwise, dedicate an area of your home as a gym or studio to make it easier to stick to a routine each day. Set up all the gym equipment you might need – weights, yoga mats, and kettlebells etc. Add a few inspirational images to keep you motivated, have your playlist ready, along with water bottles and towels.
Hold a movie night to remember – whether it’s a cult classic, a movie marathon or the latest blockbuster, why not create an outdoor cinema! Either project a movie onto a sheet in the backyard or hire a backyard cinema and create a cosy atmosphere with beanbags, blow-up mattresses, pillows, rugs and floor cushions. Or if you have a pool, create the ultimate summer indulgence and have your movie night while floating in the pool. Make sure you make it an authentic movie experience with popcorn, choc-tops and a candy bar!
Explore your town
Lastly, don’t forget to go out exploring in your hometown. Is there a local attraction that you have never seen or activity your town is well-known for?
Get exploring and try your local:
- Ocean walks
The possibilities are endless when it comes to a holiday at home. Above all, remember to have fun! Your staycation will be what you make it.
