A new fence achieves a new look in this backyard renovation
In the lead-up to summer, the Dawson family decided to transform their outdoor space and pool with a backyard renovation. The aim was to create a laid-back elegance without breaking the bank. For these experienced renovators, that meant choosing great materials, DIY wherever possible and invoking the power of ocean-inspired colours.
The first order of business was updating the boundary walls. Bordering the backyard on three sides, they have a major visual impact. And while the existing fences were structurally sound, they were unattractive and needed to deliver more privacy.
Then, to create the perfect backdrop for their backyard renovation, the Dawsons wanted a product that offered versatility, ease of installation and the potential for creative customisation. ‘We had huge success using it previously, so we defaulted to this product knowing what we could easily achieve,’ Peter Dawson says. ‘We needed a material that would allow us to create a relaxed coastal space, and being able to choose and use our own colours was crucial to our design.’

Install, decorate, enjoy
Because the Dawsons were familiar with ModularWalls, the installation was simple and straightforward, making their backyard renovation hassle-free.
‘It was delivered to our door; we unpacked it, primed and painted it, and installed it over a week!‘ Peter says.‘Once all the posts are in position, the panels just slide right in. It’s a simple yet highly effective system for anyone with a bit of practical ability to use!’
The biggest challenge was ensuring the bespoke colour scheme was perfect. For this, the family drew inspiration from a precious object in their home: a teacup gifted from daughter to mother. They used the Taubmans Coloursmith app to create three organic shades, which they named ‘Relax’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Repeat’.
Using the SlimWall panels as a canvas, they applied the colour in bands from deepest to lightest. The result is a striking ombre effect, with the space awash in shades of sage green, soft grey and grey-white. Emphasising the Expressed Joints draws the eye across the area, which flows seamlessly from the interiors and around the pool. Finally, they completed the backyard renovation with travertine tilework, pale grey decking, and lighting for effortless entertaining.
‘We are totally in love with this space; it’s so easy to relax and live in. The wall has created a beautiful backdrop and set the scene for our resort-style area. We could not have achieved our overall look and feel without having the versatility of the SlimWall!
